While the Short Service in the Indian Army is working on a project to recruit young men and women for a period of three years, it is said that there will be a shortfall in its officer rank in the near future. Currently, the minimum an officer serves in the Army needs to be 10 years under the Short Service Commission.

As for the recruitment of men and women, it is said that there will be no compromise on training or no post-retirement benefits that will be extended to the officers. However, in terms of casualties, benefits like family pensions and ECHS facilities will be given to them just as they are given to regular officers.

The first experiment of the recruitment model which is called the Tour of Duty model will aim to recruit 100 officers and 1,000 jawans wherein one out of the three years will be spent on training.
