India Sees The Highest One-Day Spike With 5242 Coronavirus Cases

Government officials have said that the jump in COVID-19 cases is due to the return of thousands of migrant workers to their respective hometowns.

On Monday, India has reported the highest one-day spike in the number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in a single day so far with 5,242 more people testing positive in the last 24 hours while the number of people who died from the virus rose to 3,029.

Apart from this, 550 of India’s 736 districts have reported COVID-19 cases on May 17 with an addition of around 180 districts in the last fortnight. Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh witnessed the maximum increase in the number of districts affected since May 1.

Government officials have said that the jump in numbers is a result of the return of thousands of migrant workers to rural areas of their hometowns that lack efficient health infrastructure. Presently, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi have the highest number of Covid-19 cases.
